February
TriBranch (Fremont, San Ramon, Livermore) AAUW Funds Luncheon

Date: Saturday, February 5, 2011 11:30 AM to 2 PM
Place: Sunol Valley Golf Course Restaurant, Livermore
Topic: Socially Responsible Investment
Speaker: Wendy Walker

Tri-Branch: Hayward/Castro Valley, Fremont, and Livermore/Pleasanton/Dublin AAUWs.

The Tri-Branch Educational Fund Luncheon, at Sunol Valley Golf Club,
featured Wendy Walker, who is studying at UC Berkeley and plans to dedicate
her career to sustainable and responsible investing.

Ms. Walker's education is supported by an EF Fellowship/Career Development Grant
partly funded by the Jan Barnhart/Gladys Betts Research and Special Projects Grant
(completed November 2007 by AAUW North Peninsula in the 50th year of EF).

When Helen Dourov, who retired to Livermore and left the North Peninsula AAUW
Branch, she was told by Anne Les, Jan Barnhart's long-time friend, that Wendy
Walker had received the Jan Barnhart/Gladys Betts Research and Special Projects
Grant. This sparked some curiosity about the two women. The AAUW-NP Branch named
the $35,000 Grant for Jan and Gladys because of their commitment to the AAUW
goals of equity for women and girls and their belief in providing funds for
women doing graduate studies.

Jan Barnhart graduated from San Diego State in 1947, where she was awarded a
one-year membership in the San Diego Branch. She joined the Indianola, Iowa
Branch in the fifties. She has belonged to the San Bruno Branch for more than
fifty years. Jan served two terms as president of the San Bruno Branch, as well
as Chair of the International Relations Group for many years. On the
AAUW California State level, she served as the Chair of the Education Committee.
She attended numerous state conventions, one regional convention in Hawaii, and
the Association Convention in Boston. She is still keeping up her membership in
the North Peninsula Branch, formerly the San Bruno Branch.

Jan Barnhart was recognized by the National American Association of University
Women as a Life Member for her more than 50 years in the AAUW.

Gladys Betts was in the first group of five women to earn a degree in Engineering from
Penn State University. After marrying and settling in New Jersey, she joined the Sussex
County Branch of AAUW in its second year of existence, about 1948. She held her
membership until 1997, when she moved to California to live with her daughter, Laraine
Touw. One of the first things Gladys did to feel at home in California was to find an
AAUW branch to join. She believed very strongly in AAUW and the power of education
for women. She supported EF, LAF, and the Eleanor Roosevelt Fund. AAUW was
important for her all her adult life, and she participated in as many activities as she could.
The AAUW-NP Branch really appreciated her contributions and so honored her by the
grant in November 2007.

Gladys Betts received the national AAUW Life Membership Award
for her more than 50 years in AAUW.
